Pet Friendly Four Sisters Inns

California B&Bs Roll Out the Welcome Mat for Pets

1859 Historic National HotelCalifornia bed and breakfast inns make it easy to travel on vacation with four-legged friends.  There are more than 70 pet-friendly CABBI member inns, some of which go out of their way to pamper pooches with special treats, blankets and more.

At the 1859 Historic National Hotel in Jamestown, proprietor Stephen Willey understands pet owners who not only travel with their pets but also consider them part of the family.  As a pet owner himself, he provides a welcome basket for guest dogs that include stainless steel dog bowls, biscuit treats, bed blanket, towels for wiping Fido’s feet and little pocket capsules containing scooper bags.  Pets are even permitted to accompany guests on the inn’s vine covered patio for meals.  Pet-sitting services can also be arranged.

In Mendocino, the MacCullum House rolls out the welcome mat with a care package that includes a pet bed, a blanket, pet towel, waste bags and treats. The inn also provides stainless steel water and food dishes on a rubber mat in the guests’ room. When guests need to go somewhere without their pet, MacCullum House can arrange to have a pet sitter stay with the pet in the guests’ room and provide services that include feeding, watering, basic grooming, walking dogs around the immediate vicinity, changing litter, administering meds and providing affection.

Old Monterey InnThe Old Monterey Inn ensures guests with pets have an outside room with a private entrance and provides a welcome package, including doggie blankets, gourmet treats, bowls, and waste bags.  The inn is located in a residential area on over an acre--giving dogs and their owners places to roam--and is also within walking distance to Historic Downtown Monterey.

Carmel has long been known as a welcoming destination for dogs with pet friendly lodging and restaurants.  Tradewinds Carmel takes their commitment to caring for animals a step further by contributing to animal charities.  The inn is currently donating $1 to the Monterey County SPCA for each new Facebook “like” they receive through the end of March.  The inn offers easy-access, pet friendly rooms with balconies and a beautiful outdoor courtyard for enjoying breakfast with pets.  The inn has a number of trusted pet sitters guests can call on.  A pet groomer, Royal Paws, which is located just a half-block away, gives special consideration to Tradewinds guests and offers after-beach clean-up packages at great rates.  Unlike other inns, Tradewinds does not have a weight limit for dogs so guests can bring anything from a miniature poodle to a great dane.

Four Sisters Inns has three properties that are especially well-suited for traveling with dogs: Seal Cove Inn, Gosby House Inn and Blue Lantern Inn. The Seal Cove Inn is adjacent to the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve in Moss Beach.  Though pets are not allowed inside the Reserve itself, the area between the Reserve and the inn features walking trails, a cypress grove and wildflower meadow that is a wonderful place to walk with a dog. Gosby House Inn is just a few blocks from the Monterey Bay Coastal Trail, which snakes 29 miles along the shoreline. The trail is nirvana for dog walkers, certainly long enough for even the most active dog to get a great workout while enjoying spectacular scenery.  Set above Dana Point Harbor, the Blue Lantern Inn is close to Doheny State Park, featuring 62 acres of park land with hiking and walking trails. The three inns serve breakfast in the guests’ room and include a treat for the canine companions.

Hotel CharlotteOn the way to Yosemite, the pet-friendly Hotel Charlotte is home to a piano-playing pooch named Goose.  Goose is the honorary mayor of Groveland, having been duly elected twice because of his “fun” raising abilities.  The inn invites traveling pets to play with Goose and share in his treats.

For guests traveling with furry friends, most inns require a pet fee.  Some inns have weight restrictions and will usually limit the number of pets to two per guest room.  All of the inns require that pets not be left alone in the rooms.  Inns expect that owners will keep pets under their control at all times and will pick up and properly dispose of waste.  Inns also request that pets be well-behaved, up-to-date with vaccinations, and free of ticks and fleas.

To search for pet friendly inns in California, visit www.cabbi.com/pet-friendly/ and select a region or city. The search results display each inn's address, phone, website, photo, a description, rate range, a "view profile" link for more information and photos, and a "reservations" link for checking availability and/or booking a room.
