Lost Coast

Rural Escapes and Small-Town Getaways

Trade your gridlocked freeway commute and frenzied schedule for an idyllic respite from city life. Escape to a bed and breakfast inn tucked along the California's backroads and quiet, small town streets. These rural gems beckon with a nostalgic charm and relaxed pace that recall simpler times.

Creekside B&BNestled in the heart of California's central coast wine country is the charming Creekside Bed and Breakfast. This secluded inn neighbors graceful vineyards and farmland where cows dot the hillsides.  The bed and breakfast itself is a charming barn with private entrances and patios. Each room features seductive beds, stone fireplaces and kitchenettes.  A full gourmet breakfast is delivered daily, and in-room spa services are available. Although close to Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo, this inn provides an escape to the rural countryside of the central coast.

Sequoia ViewSequoia View Bed and Breakfast is located just outside the Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks near Visalia. The Sequoia View offers guests a rustic locavore experience with its proximity to the Blossom and Fruit Trail, a 62-mile stretch of farmland where visitors can purchase fruits and vegetables directly from local farmers. Sequoia View, set on 20 acres, features three suites, all with private entrances and bathrooms. Guests will wake in the morning to a full breakfast with fresh squeezed orange juice from the inn’s own trees. Afternoons feature something a little stronger:  the innkeepers are winemakers who are happy to share the fruits of their labors with complimentary wine-tastings.

Homestead CottagesJust 30 minutes from the south gate of Yosemite National Park, Homestead Cottages is a collection of freestanding cabins  nestled among mature oaks on 160 acres--most of which has been left in a natural state for wildlife.  Guests can enjoy their own private cabin in the mountains while indulging in the luxury of a fine hotel.  The warmth of yellow pine, hand-troweled plaster and Saltillo tile floors create an inviting atmosphere.  Each cottage has its own private outdoor setting area to watch the stars at night or the wildlife at dawn.  Hiking and horseback riding adventures are available nearby.

Hotel CharlotteThe Hotel Charlotte is a historic 10-room hotel located in the quaint gold rush town of Groveland, just 24 miles from the north gate of Yosemite National Park.  The rugged countryside offers views of waterfalls at Rainbow Pools, horseback riding on the headlands and a variety of local wineries. From the vineyards to the farmers, agriculture of the region is essential to the Hotel Charlotte experience. The Hotel’s award-winning restaurant features the bounty of the surrounding landscape. The hotel provides guests with creature comforts as well. Full-size claw foot tubs are perfect for soaking in and the large, recently renovated rooms offer a serene backdrop for a good night’s sleep.

Groveland HotelAlso in Groveland, the Groveland Hotel brings its guests close to everything this historic place has to offer: world-class whitewater on the Tuolumne River, hiking trails right next door in Stanislaus National Forest and plenty of open space for exploring. This fully-restored historic inn offers a small-town escape into the Gold Rush era, where guests will enjoy featherbeds, a delicious full breakfast, free Wi-Fi and private spa tubs in each of the hotel’s three suites. The hotel’s award-winning Cellar Door restaurant delivers fine California cuisine as well as a wine list that showcases locally-sourced vintages.

Goodman HouseGoodman House Bed and Breakfast offers guests a comfortable retreat in downtown Chico amid the pastoral scenes of California’ Central Valley. This five-room inn features gourmet breakfasts and weekend wine-tastings featuring local vintages. Starting in May, the nearby Sierra Oro Farm Trail will offer group tours that feature stops at area farms and vineyards. Guests can combine a stay at Goodman House Bed and Breakfast with an adventure on the Farm Trail. At the end of the day, return to this 1906 Colonial Revival in downtown Chico for the Goodman House’s irresistibly comfortable beds, claw foot tubs and evening wine and cheese. For more information about the Sierra Oro Farm Trail visit www.sierraoro.org.

McCloud HotelTake a step back in time with the historic McCloud Hotel at the base of Mt. Shasta.  The hotel is nestled in the town of McCloud which only has about 1,000 residents and is surrounded by woodlands, streams and lakes in the shadow of one of California’s most majestic mountains. Guests can go hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, canoeing, or play a round of golf.  The recently renovated hotel offers breathtaking views, comfortable lodging with private jetted tubs and fine linens, and complimentary full breakfasts and afternoon wine tastings.  The hotel is also now serving dinner Thursday through Sunday evenings.

Gingerbread MansionThe Gingerbread Mansion Inn in Ferndale is just minutes away from some of the most remote and beautiful coastal terrain in California. The town is the northern gateway to the King Range National Conservation Area, also known as the Lost Coast. The spectacular meeting of land and sea is a dominant feature, but it is also an area of mountain streams, trails and Redwood forests ideal for exploration. The Gingerbread Mansion Inn is a pleasing counterpoint to the wildness of the landscape. The 11-room, storybook Victorian inn features richly-appointed guest rooms, many with fireplaces and claw foot soaking tubs. Each guest also receives plush slippers to take home.

Elk Cove Inn & SpaThe Elk Cove Inn and Spa, a retreat on the Mendocino Coast, is situated high on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. This secluded hideaway provides fine dining, comfortable rooms and access to the countryside as well. After a day of hiking the redwood forests, horseback riding on the beach or ocean kayaking, visitors can enjoy Elk Cove Inn’s happy hour or a tandem massage.  A complimentary glass of port in the evening provides a satisfying nightcap. The inn’s guest rooms feature fireplaces, private baths, down comforters, comfortable chairs and fresh flowers from the inn’s gardens. Many of the rooms have ocean views.

Timber Cove InnLocated just miles north of the town of Jenner on the Sonoma Coast, the Timber Cove Inn is a retreat that offers seclusion and luxury in a rural setting. Guests of Timber Cove Inn will find many wineries and three state parks at their doorstep, with an expanse of ocean and farmland vistas to enjoy. All of the Timber Cove’s 50 rooms have either ocean or forest views and many have claw foot tubs and fireplaces. With its high ceilings, exposed beams and towering rock fireplace, Timber Cove Inn echoes the coastal landscape that surrounds it.

Inn at OccidentalSecluded beneath redwoods in the hamlet of Occidental, the Inn at Occidental is uniquely suited to give guests a taste of the California countryside. Here, access to farmland and the ocean is available in equal measure.  The area around the Inn at Occidental is a gateway to miles of vineyard views and hiking for those who are feeling adventurous. The inn provides guests with gourmet breakfasts, fine linens and private porches perfect for sitting and soaking up the California sun. In the evening, the inn brightens its cheery living room (and its guests!) with a complimentary wine and cheese reception.

Honor MansionThe Honor Mansion is set on nearly four acres of secluded grounds in Sonoma Wine country. Guests can explore local farm trails and cheese trails, book a tour to learn about bio-dynamic winemaking, and sample local organic wines and produce.  Nearby Lake Sonoma is stocked with fish for a day of leisurely casting. At Armstrong Redwood Park, visitors can hike for miles without seeing a soul. Closer to the Mansion, guests will find a host of sporting activities to partake in. The intimate inn serves a gourmet breakfast each morning and wine and appetizers each afternoon.
